Behind the Candelabra Scott Thorson & Alex Thorleifson read online review & book description:

In this unusually frank book Scott Thorson tells all: the good, the bad, and the ugly truths about a legendary entertainer who went to outrageous extremes to prevent public knowledge of his homosexuality. Liberace's unhappy childhood, dominated by a mother determined to force him into a concert career, serves as the prologue for a story that goes on to detail Liberace s early appearances in honky-tonks, his move to New York to seek fame, and, finally, his first booking in Las Vegas, where he was courted by the Mafia. His successes create a bright counterpoint to a darker tale of a man hungry for power, given to every excess. Liberace's credo "too much of a good thing is wonderful" is reflected here in his acquisition of new lovers, luxurious homes, a large collection of pornography, and a total of twenty-six house dogs. Behind the Candelabra also reveals the details of the fundamentally tender love affair between Liberace and Thorson whom Liberace sent to his own plastic surgeon to have his face remodeled in Liberace's own image! This fast-paced story, sprinkled with anecdotes about famous entertainers such as Michael Jackson and Shirley MacLaine, ends with an intimate look at Liberace's final days as he lay dying of AIDS and his deathbed reconciliation with Scott.

This is a real page-turner. I simply couldn't put it down. Thorson tells a heart-warming account of his life with and love of the greatest showman to have graced the stage.

This was a fast and good read. But I must confess, I saw the movie and then bought the book. I remember watching Liberace as a kid. I was a young adult when all of this was going on, but didn't buy Into to the tabloids much. There are 2 sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth. I do believe that Scott experienced, from his eyes, most of what is written here.

But whoever the did the spell checking... poor. Since when would anyone transcribe the word "and" as "arid"? Really? While I've always been a "friend of Dorothy" (just a friend; an observer), Liberace always gave me the creeps. Now I know why. It wasn't that he was gay. He was a sleazy, manipulating jerk. I wish Scott the best and hope he has recovered from his addictions.

So sad, what happened to this young boy, a victim of a ruthless celebrity who believed he was entitled to everything- including the destruction of unknown numbers of lives. Please buy this book, if only out of the goodness of your heart. It's not a bad read either and held my interest most of the time. :(

Terribly sad account of Liberace's life. The book is an interesting read and the recent movie with Douglas and Damon does not do this book any justice. Scott, if you're reading this, it's time for you to get your act together and move on with your life. Stop living your life in the past. Take what you have learned and make a new life for yourself. It's time....
  • Captivating, marathon read!

Scott Thorsen's life could have been written by the Grimm brothers -- the ups and downs, twists and turns, must have made HBO's decision to commit time, money and significant talent to a screen adaptation

Great story! Exactly like the movie with a little more detail but not much. Wonderful summer read.

I'm a bit young to remember Liberace but I did hear my parents talk about him. I honestly bought this book because it was supposed to have scandal and all that good stuff. I do believe Liberace was gay and while I believe the author as well I thought it was slightly boring. I thought there would have been more details regarding Liberace's sexual ways I guess. His relationship w/ a man 40 years his junior sounds risqué but Scott seemed like a prude. Guess I just wasnt expecting such a quiet tale. Though still an interesting read.
