I read this book as a teenager. It was one of my favorites. 30 years later to read it again. I remembered everything. Almost every detail. I feel the same thrill when Jane says"roll the stone". Zane Grey loves words. But even though nobody talks like this now and probably never did. It is beautiful to read.
  • A seminal work.

This is a work that educates us to the level of literacy of the common man of 100 years ago. Writing with abandon and no apology Zane Grey proceeds to tell a story, like the great symphonies of the nineteenth century (of which he was). He coaxes you in and along, and through poetic scenes of pastoral tranquility, the magnificent Utah landscape, and the hard edged violent nature of those who saw it from the back of a great mount. A great romantic adventure. The true beginning of a wonderful genre.

I didn't want it to end and I already want to read it again! Thank you Zane Gray for such a great read.
  • Dated Romance, but considered Grey's best work.

A predictable but satisfying romance in a time when real men treated their women with respect and love. I was a little put off with his depiction of Mormons, but a romance has to have a conflict and evil to overcome and I suppose the Mormons provided an easy target. Just treat it for what it is; a work of fiction. He shows off his writers chops when describing nature.
