The Red Badge of Courage Stephen Crane read online review & book description:

An 18 year old Union soldier named Henry Fleming awaits the call to his first taste of battle. There on the battlefield, all the glory and romance of warfare is gone, and the only things that remain are self-doubt and a deep, dark fear. One of the first great realist depictions of warfare, Stephen Crane's classic novel presents the deeply personal psychological struggles of an individual soldier. Through Henry's eye, the American Civil War appears not as a nation at war with itself, but as one man's battle between honor and survival.

This book is so boring unless you need to read for school, I advise you don't waste your time.
  • Hard to read

The author makes a decision that I personally dislike. Whenever there is dialogue, the words are misspelled to try to get the accent across to the reader. There was several times that I was not able to understand what was being said because of this.

Very Excellent Book, gives a good understanding of how war was back then, and the feelings and emotions of soldiers and it has a good description of nature and all the surroundings that they encountered.
  • Not An Instant Classic

I enjoy a good work of literature every now and then, but this book was one the least entertaining I've read by far. It's very monotone and has no real point to it. When you think of the Scarlet Letter or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, you think, "Man, those were good books." But The Red Badge of Courage just wasn't one of those books. There was no likable aspect to the youth or anyone else. This book is unsatisfactory to read.

  • Cruelty of war

The youths thoughts and perspectives of the insanity that was playing out around him is a description of insanity itself. The intenseness of all of the emotions mimicked the back and forth struggles of both the blue and gray lines. In the end sanity is the final word without regret or shame of the past events.
