A Single Shard Linda Sue Park read online review & book description:

Winner of the 2002 Newbery Medal

In this Newbery Medal-winning book set in 12th century Korea, Tree-ear, a 13-year-old orphan, lives under a bridge in Ch’ulp’o, a potters' village famed for delicate celadon ware. He has become fascinated with the potter’s craft; he wants nothing more than to watch master potter Min at work, and he dreams of making a pot of his own someday. When Min takes Tree-ear on as his helper, Tree-ear is elated — until he finds obstacles in his path: the backbreaking labor of digging and hauling clay, Min’s irascible temper, and his own ignorance. But Tree-ear is determined to prove himself — even if it means taking a long, solitary journey on foot to present Min’s work in the hope of a royal commission . . . even if it means arriving at the royal court with nothing to show but a single celadon shard.

This book was a fun book to read because there was a lot of action. It had a lot of detail and description. It was a bit short but overall it was a great book.

I had to read this book as part of summer reading and it was decent. I'm not a big reader but I was still able to get through it. I can't say I enjoyed it however. I would not recommend this book for recreational reading. I could see how others might like it though.

I loved this book but people who only read the beginning shouldn't say it's bad.... It's only the beginning that's boring then it's a very good book. I recommend everyone reads it.

Although the Asian genre was not at the top of my list, I read this after a fellow teacher recommended it. I couldn't put it down. One of my top ten favorites. Great read aloud for an upper intermediate or middle school classroom. Beautifully written it tells the story of an orphan in ancient Korea. Park does a fantastic job with character development and relationships. Well deserving of the Newbery Award.
