City of Thieves David Benioff read online review & book description:

From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour and When the Nines Roll Over and co-creator of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival — and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime.

During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible.

By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, the New York Times bestseller City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

You really pay for a book twice. Once to purchase a book. Secondly, with your time. This book was worth my time. My real rating is whether I would read a book again. I would read City of Thieves again. Not an easy book to read though. It was when life was hard.

Of Mice and Men, the book that allowed me to feel and experience emotions I never would have imagined, reading could cause. I fell in love with reading that week, and is the reason I stop at all used book stores in search for adventure, a history lesson, days of old and of tomorrow, a life's lesson, and visit's to exotic land's born of pure fantasy and worlds that are home to epic heroes. I enjoy all genres and although I always experience emotions in almost every book, I never experience any as deep and personal as the ones I did with that first book. Until now. A superbly written story, which is filled with realistic ways of life, worldly views, education and street smarts paired with the type of humor that can only come living in WW2 Russia! The characters could not have been better. Their time together, experiencing the forms a relationship that will be in your thoughts long after you put it down. Just as everything looks to be okay and its alright to relax, to breath and give a cheer!.. The absolute best plot twist ever written is placed perfectly in the story which you can't help but appreciate, as tears stream down your face. Yes, two books have made me cry, and for that I am thankful, not ashamed! I am reminded again how thankful I am to have a love for reading and to look forward to evenings I can spend anywhere I can imagine.
