Beach Read Emily Henry read online review & book description:

“Original, sparkling bright, and layered with feeling.”—Sally Thorne, author of The Hating Game

A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

When I first read the summary, I wasn’t so sure about this book, but when I started, I couldn’t stop. Not only did I fall in love with the characters, but the story itself. It’s unlike any other romance book I’ve read in the best of ways. There’s so much depth and a beating, aching heart amongst the laughter. Instead of rose-colored glasses, it offers hope amongst believable stories. Loved every second.

It was a fun rom-com of not happily ever after, but happy with what you have in front of you and the twists in life that make love interesting.

Wouldn’t want to read this on the beach. Takes a while to actually become engaged in the story and then it’ll lag again. A decent love story/ decent characters. Not terrible but definitely not the best.

First time reading this author. If you are not a committed reader you might not be able to get through this one. It is very long. This is definitely not a romcom, so don’t let the title or cover fool you. However, it is not a usual kind of book, or a usual romance. A lot of ups and downs, realistically like life. I did enjoy it and would read this author again.

There are so many notations I made while reading this book due to all the great quotes that resonated with me. I loved both January and Gus’s relationship, witty banter, friendship, but, most of all, their vulnerabilities. Although they are 100% imperfect individuals, they are both each other’s perfect partners. I felt all the things you would want to feel while reading a rom-com. Additionally, Gus’s novel idea that ran throughout the entire book was both refreshing and interesting to read. I think this book will remain with me for a very long time.
