It Ends with Us Colleen Hoover read online review & book description:

In this “brave and heartbreaking novel that digs its claws into you and doesn’t let go, long after you’ve finished it” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author) from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of All Your Perfects, a workaholic with a too-good-to-be-true romance can’t stop thinking about her first love.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

An honest, evocative, and tender novel, It Ends with Us is “a glorious and touching read, a forever keeper. The kind of book that gets handed down” (USA TODAY).

I couldn’t put this book down. I was captivated by the raw and REAL emotions in this story. I laughed out loud, cried, cringed, rejoiced, held my breath, and finally let that breath out. The way Colleen wrote this book truly captures the complexity and reality of this situation Lily is in. Humanizing the monster and empathizing with everyone involved. Thank you for writing this!

I feel like every emotion I’ve had in my life, I had reading this book. I had no idea what I was going to read about when I read this book, but it was amazing. A must read. For anyone who has experienced love, love lost, domestic violence, fighting your head and heart. It’s all there, and wonderfully made.

TW: abuse and r*pe I had high hopes, but It Ends With Us is a wattpaddy story that tries adding nuance to themes of domestic abuse… but nuance and wattpad do not belong together. For a reason. The central theme is that abusers should be shamed instead of women who stay in abusive situations. I agree. But the empathetic approach stripped Lily of her own agency and it was SO frustrating. Like a big plot point was someone’s advice saying if her abuser really loved her, HE wouldn’t let her get back together with him?? ❗️What about if he really loved her, he wouldn’t have freaking abused her?!❗️ I tried to empathize every time she returned to her abuser. But his only personality trait was being perfect and his only flaw was the abuse. There was no substance or depth to their relationship prior and I just couldn’t agree with her justifications. Compared to him, Atlas was a saint BUT he really just did the bare minimum. But the ending is what ruined it (no spoilers): the author uses victim-blaming (which she was preaching against the whole book) to justify keeping the abuser around. That was the happy ending. It felt so tone-deaf instead of nuanced and mature. It’s not a romance, it’s an exploration of abusive relationships. But to me, it came off as shallow and contradicting because of the wattpad setting/plot/ relationships. Recommend to ppl seeking to enter a blinding rage 😍
