Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00022]Hiring my brother’s best friend was not on my to-do list.

Neither was he.

Expanding my dirty cocktail bar into food was supposed to be easy, except finding a chef in my little town of Whiskey Key is anything but.

Until Parker Hamilton comes home—bringing his Michelin starred chef’s hat with him.

He has no work. I need someone like him in my new kitchen.

There’s just one problem: I hate his cocky, filthy-mouthed, sexy-as-hell guts.

Even if I might want him. Just a little…

Working for my best friend’s sister? Not on my to-do list.

She’s another story.

Whiskey Key was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, except I haven’t reached the heights I have by lying in a hammock drinking cocktails. So when Raven Archer is desperate for a chef, I offer up my skills.

I’m bored. She needs what I can give her.

Except there’s a problem: I’ve always hated her.

Her and her big, blue eyes, sassy mouth, and killer curves.

If only I didn’t want her.

Review:

Mixed Up was a truly unique take on two of my favorite tropes: brother’s best friend and hate to love. Most books that I’ve read that involve a character fall in love with her older brother’s best friend have her pining after him for years. In this case, they’ve hated each other their whole lives, which was definitely something different. This was a funny and compelling read. Emma Hart never fails to provide laugh out loud stories that are pretty light on angst, and also have the perfect amount of steam. Raven and Parker are both solid and believable characters. It wasn’t a perfect novel by any means and I did have some issues with it, but it was entertaining and enjoyable for the most part. I recommend it if you want something that you can quickly devour in just a few hours. It also features food and drinks, so what more could you possibly ask for?

Raven was seriously awesome. I haven’t read a ton of books about a mixologist. I thought the “dirty” (pun intended since her business is also called this) names she came up with for her drinks were extremely witty and hilarious. My favorite part about her was easily her personality though. She’s fierce, like most Emma Hart characters are. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believes is right. She is super witty and I liked that about her as well. However, I felt like she was even sassier than most of her previous characters. All in all, she was a cool character who I enjoyed reading.

On the other hand, we have Parker, who was a solid character as well. To be completely honest, he doesn’t stand out all that much to me. I would have liked to see even more growth from his character. It feels like we don’t know that much about his personality besides the fact that he banters like crazy with Raven and is best friends with her brother. I thought it was weird that most of the book revolves around his friendship with her brother, but we don’t see much actual interaction between them. I did like that he was a cook because we don’t have enough of heroes who are in romance novels.

As mentioned already, the romance is unique and I enjoyed that. I’m always a sucker for a brother’s best friend romance and this was a whole new twist. Though I did have some issues with the hate to love thing. I wanted more of an explanation to why they hated each other. I feel like there wasn’t enough development and getting to know each other, which I would have liked to see. All that aside, I still liked the romance. I thought they made a good team in Dirty and outside of the business. It was steamy at times, and the sex scenes were pretty well written.

I’m definitely glad that I read Emma Hart’s latest novel. She’s always hilarious and writes such unique and memorable characters. They always feel very realistic, and that’s another reason why I find myself continually picking up her books. I hope that Cami and Ryan get a book (either as a couple or separately) because I don’t want these stories to end! This was just what I needed since I was looking for a book that had limited angst and was just lighthearted in general. Thanks again for coming through for another solid book, Emma Hart!

Excerpt:

I knew I was making a mistake. After what Raven said last night at dinner, I had the strongest urge to find out what her cocktail menu was. With names like Dirty Screw and The Slutwhisperer, what other gems did she have hidden on there?
Shit, what gems were hidden inside her apparently filthy mind?
I had no place to be thinking that. She was Ryan’s sister and the bane of my goddamn existence. I didn’t give a shit what was inside her head or how she came up with a filthy cocktail menu.
I was going to believe that she’d spent stupid amounts of time on the Internet coming up with those kinds of names. Seeing her in that damn short dress yesterday had already affected me enough—not to mention the fact that she’d changed since I last saw her.
I didn’t know people could change so much in only three years, but Raven Archer had. She was no longer post-grad, trying to seriously figure out what she wanted to do with her life, uncertain and serving burgers to people to make money.
She was grown-up, in more ways than just her age. She was even hotter-headed that she was back then. She seemed stronger and more stubborn, and her tongue was so sharp I probably have scars from how quickly she cut me with her words.
She was taller and fucking curvier, too.
Her lips were fuller. Her eyes were brighter. And the general air that hung about her, that hint of sass and sexiness, the very same thing that made me insult her whenever I opened my mouth almost made me want her, too.
And that was exactly why I couldn’t sit and think about what went on in her mind—filthy or otherwise.
No matter what she looked like or how fucking hot she was, she was my best friend’s sister. Nobody was more off-limits than she was. That wasn’t a new development. It had always been that way.
Thank fucking god I was only here for the summer, and only because my mother had guilted me into it.
As soon as the summer was over, I’d go for my next challenge.
I could get through a few weeks of being in the same town or two as Raven—because after today, avoidance was at the top of my life.
Otherwise, I’d go fucking insane.
Dirty was right on the seafront, only meters away from a small, sandy bay. It’d only taken me a few minutes to walk here from where I’d parked downtown, and despite the music coming from inside the bar, I could still hear the gentle crashing of the waves as they crawled up the sand. The water was right out, and I stared out at the water as I headed up the hill to the bar.
Fairy lights twinkled along the underside of the roof that jutted out over the sidewalk. It was like a goddamn princess castle from the outside, but the beachy vibe was evident. Different sized and colored shells covered the pillars that held up the balcony that jutted out over the front doors.
I pushed open the door. Cold air blasted into me, and so did the heavy bass beat of the music that blared out from the speakers just above my head. There were more fairy lights inside, but they were strung all beneath the bar, across the beams on the ceiling, and over the back wall where the spirits were on the wall. There wasn’t much else in the way of lighting, but what there was was effective enough in holding the entire space into a balance between bright and dusky.
The inside of Raven’s bar was like being outside at the moment the sun set.
I cast my gaze over the rest of the bar. The solid, wood tables and stools that lines the walls and filled the space to my left all had tiny vases of fresh flowers in. Even those were surrounded by fairy lights.
Fucking hell, did she let a class of little girls in here to decorate?
No matter what I felt about the fairy lights, it looked good. Damn good.
I stepped up to the bar and leaned forward on it. Raven was at the other end of the bar, wearing jeans and a tight tank top that tucked beneath the waistband. Strappy, silver heels on her feet glinted off the under-bar lighting, and it was all too easy for me to drop my eyes there then slowly drag my gaze up the length of her entire body.
Light bounced off the chrome cocktail shaker in her hand as she shook it. She popped off the top with one slick of her thumb, and without spilling a drop, poured the pink-red liquid into two martini-style glasses. With her other hand, she reached back to the register and jabbed at it.
Seconds later, she was handing them back their change. It all happened in a flash.
How did such she go from lost to…this…so quick?
“Raven!” A dark-haired woman sitting a few stools away from me with her friend yelled. “There’s a hot guy staring at you!”
I laughed loudly as Raven jerked around. Her gaze landed on me with what felt like a snap, and I swore she mouthed, “Motherfucker,” before she stalked to this end of the bar.
Her hands slapped on the bar in front of me. “What are you doing here?”
“I told you I was coming to check out your menu.”
“He was checking out more than the menu,” the woman’s friend giggled.
Raven held her finger up to them, and with her other hand, slapped a smooth, laminated menu in front of me. “Did you drive?”
“No, I walked all the way from Key West.” I picked up the menu. “Of course I drove.”
“Pick one,” she said, moving away. “I’m not serving you anymore than that. Make it a good choice. What can I get for you?” she asked someone else, cutting me off before I could say a word.
I raised my eyebrows.
“She runs a tight ship,” the first woman said. “Three days ago, there was a guy in here spiking drinks. She caught him and bashed him in the balls with her cocktail shaker so he couldn’t run from the security guard.”
Could my eyebrows go up any higher? “That doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I’ve seen her do worse.”
The second woman’s eyes narrowed. “You have? You know her?”
The first woman rolled her eyes. “Of course he does, Cam. When have you seen her react to a customer like that? He obviously pissed her off in a past life or something.”
“I should be so lucky.” I smirked. “More like all in this life.”
“Her brother’s friend, right?” She tilted her head to the side. “Yeah, she mentioned she hated you.”
She’d talked about me?
“She didn’t say you were hot, though,” the second woman said.
“Camille!”
Ahhh.
The best friends.
“What?” Camille said. “I’m just saying.”
“No more Slutwhisperers for you,” the other woman—the one I presumed to be Lani—said, reaching for her glass.
Camille leaned over and slurped the last of the drink through the straw.
That explained the name of the cocktail.
“What are you doing?” Raven asked, stopping in front of them. “Cam? Your glass is empty. Let me refill that for you.” She winked to the other girl as she turned around.
What was she doing?
She put her back to her friends and grabbed the tequila bottle. She tipped it over a cocktail shaker without actually pouring anything into it. My lips quirked up as she put together what was some pink juice or something and blended it with raspberries.
She poured the mixture into a glass with some vigor in front of Camille.
She’d made her a placebo.
“Made your choice?” Raven turned to me, holding onto the shaker.
“No.” I spun the menu to face her. “What do you think I should have?”
Completely straight-faced, she said, “The Blue Balls.”

Catching Carly Review Blitz

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00027]My name is Carly Porter… And I’m really good at bad decisions.

How do I know this, exactly? Well, not including the time I accidentally bleached my eyebrows or sprained my ankle changing a lightbulb…

I had sex with my best friend’s brother.

Zeke Elliott has been a thorn in my side for eleven years. A very sexy, very tempting, very freaking annoying one. With big…hands.

And now my clitoris has a crush on the guy.

Seriously. I can’t look at him without my vagina performing accidental kegels. Which would be fine, but he’s Cain’s brother. I hate him. He’s off limits, right?

Right.

CARLY-promo5

REVIEW:

I thought that Being Brooke was a fun and witty story, so I was eager for Brooke’s best friend Carly to get her own story. I also love the fact that her love interest is Zeke, Cain’s cocky brother. This was a sweet and fast paced romantic comedy that I really enjoyed reading. It made me laugh out loud many times, and also cringe at some of the particularly awkward moments. I’m glad that I read this one and I’ll definitely continue reading anything that the awesome Emma Hart writes. I recommend this if you’re looking for a lighthearted and funny romance.

Carly is a hot mess but you have to love her for that. Her life isn’t quite as messy and complicated as Brooke’s was in the last book, but she still doesn’t have her dating life together. She’s hilarious and full of witty comments. She’s also extremely sassy and doesn’t take anyone’s crap. I wouldn’t say that she’s my favorite character, but she was still pretty solid as a whole. It was a little difficult for me to connect with her at times, but she was still a fun person.

Zeke was an awesome character, and he was a little different from your average Emma Hart hero. His personality is cocky and very sexual, but he uses it as a front to cover up his real insecurities from finding out that his fiancee was cheating on him right before he got married. So he has a lot of understandable trust issues and doesn’t open up to others easily. Other than that though, he was still swoony in his own way. He had some really sweet and adorable moments that I liked seeing. The only problem was that some of his swoony scenes just kind of came out of nowhere. He’s the type of guy who expresses his feelings in other ways than just saying it, so it was a bit out of character for him to say these amazing things.

The romance between Zeke and Carly was pretty great for the most part. They start out as being enemies but it gradually becomes a lot more than just that. I liked all of the banter that went down between them. It was hilarious and witty, and I’m always a fan of that. For the most part though, the relationship is built on the physical attraction that they have. I felt like the emotional part wasn’t explored as well as it could have been. I also didn’t really understand why they were enemies in the first place. I won’t lie though, the sex was pretty steamy for the most part.

Catching Carly wasn’t my favorite book by any means, but it was still a pretty decent novel as a whole. The pacing was rather quick, and I wasn’t able to put it down once I started reading it. It’s a quick and light read that doesn’t contain a lot of angst. If you enjoyed Being Brooke, you’ll be happy to know that both Brooke and Cain as well as some of the other characters feature pretty heavily in this one. Emma Hart is such a great author, and is now one of my go to authors when I’m looking for a light romantic comedy.

EXCERPT:

I close my eyes and slip one leg out of the window.

Everybody can see my panties.

Not that anyone is here, but I just know everybody can.

This is horrible. And it hurts.

I’m never dating again.

I’m going to buy fifty cats. They’ll never make me climb out of a bathroom window.

“You’re looking at my underwear, aren’t you?” I ask, unfortunately pausing with my legs wide open.

“No.”

“Liar.”

“It’s nice underwear.”

“Oh god.” I swing my other leg down a little too quick.

My dress rides up.

Right over my ass.

And my feet can’t reach the crates.

Zeke chuckles.

“Help me, you pig!”

More laughter.

“I’m gonna be stuck here forever. Oh my god.”

The bathroom door opens.

Can this get any worse?

A fifty-something woman I don’t recognize freezes in the middle of the restroom.

I smile sweetly.

She eyes me suspiciously before shuffling into a cubicle.

“Get me down!” I hiss, kicking my legs. “Now, Ezekiel!”

Something scrapes and knocks together.

“Still so hot when you call me that. Especially when your ass is out.” Thud. “All right, sweetcheeks. I’ve got you.”

“Sweetcheeks? What is wrong with you?”

“Look, you can hang there all night bitchin’ at me if you want, but it’s not my bare ass in the middle of the alley. As much as I’m enjoying the view.”

“Oh my god,” I groan. “You swear you’ll catch me?”

“I swear.” His fingertips brush against my bare legs.

My shudder is disguised by the trembling of my arms as I lower myself down.

Zeke’s fingers trail up the outsides of my thighs until he grasps my waist. “Let go.”

I freeze, tensing up.

“Carly, let go. I have hold of you. I won’t drop you.”

Still tensed, I let go of the window ledge.

My life flashes before my eyes. Seriously. I see everything from my first memory to the moment I let go of the ledge and I squeal because I’m going to die and I know that he’s going to drop me and—

Zeke’s strong grip solidifies when he wraps his arm around my waist and holds me against him. “There,” he says calmly into my ear. “You dropped about six inches. You’re hardly cliff-diving.”

I open my eyes and look down at where his arm is pressed across my stomach. His grip is tight, and the popping veins on his forearm trace tantalizing lines across his skin.

And my dress is still around my hips.

I reach down and tug the material over my upper thighs. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He releases me, and when he jumps down from the crates, I see a flash of his cocky grin. “Nice thong.”

That explains the grin.

I clear my throat. “Thank you. It took me an hour to pick.”

“From your drawer?”

“No. From Victoria Secret. Have you seen how many panties are on that website?”

Zeke holds his hands out for me to take. “Oh, yeah. I’m wearing a pair right now.”

My lips curve slowly as I step down onto the ground. “Interesting. What type? Brief? Thong? Boy short? V-string?”

He blinks at me when I put my shoes on. “Why do you need so many different types? It’d be much easier if you just wore none at all.”

THOUGHTS:

Guys, I’m not going to lie, I really loved Royally Matched. I thought it was so clever and witty, filled with memorable characters, a beautiful romance, a unique plot, and royalty. Need I say any more? Though I was intrigued by the royal part of the plot, I didn’t completely love the first book in the story because of all the drama. I picked up this one because I still believe that Emma Chase is a fantastic writer and I loved Henry in the first story. This was a wonderful and enchanting book. This is definitely one that’s going to stay with me for awhile. I recommend this if you’re looking for a romantic comedy that will literally make you laugh out loud. You will also cheer extremely hard for the romance from the start. I can’t recommend it enough!

The story is told through dual POV’s, but since the story mostly revolves around him, I’ll talk about Henry first. There’s honestly so many great things that I could say about this guy. When we saw him in Royally Screwed, he was a hot mess. He was struggling with what he saw while he was fighting for his country. He drinks his pain away and has random one night stands. He’s such a swoony and lovely guy all around, even if he used to be a rather serious manwhore in the past. I didn’t need to worry about Henry, he’s still just as amazing as I was hoping that he’d be. He’s hilarious, smart, and unique. I laughed out loud at so many of the random things that he said. He was such a sweetheart when it came to Sarah. He was patient, understanding, and just an all around decent guy through the way that he treated her with such respect from the beginning. Initially, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the whole dating show thing, I was afraid that he’d end up sleeping with all the girls or something like that. Fortunately, it didn’t turn out like that at all, he barely even kissed or talked to a lot of the other girls. He was a refreshingly beautiful and honest guy and I loved him from that.

Sarah was a character that I instantly understood. She’s a librarian who prefers books over people. She’s very quiet, and not super social. I immediately connected with her voice as a whole, and I was a huge fan of her spirit. To be honest with you guys, there was literally nothing about her that I didn’t like. She was a well developed, realistic, and relatable character all around. I know that readers are going to love and connect with her just like I did from the very first page. Like good old Henry, Sarah is a character that’s definitely going to stick with me long after reading.

I thought the romance was so lovely and unique. As stated, Henry is the star of this The Bachelor like show where he’s going to pick the next “Queen.” In reality, he’s really just looking to have some fun and have a big distraction from the reality that he’ll one day become King now. Sarah actually isn’t a contestant, it’s her sister who is. She’s just there to keep an eye on her. Plans change for Henry once he meets Sarah, and he honestly becomes a totally different person. It isn’t exactly insta-love or anything, but I loved that instant attraction between them and how hard Henry works to win her over. It takes a little bit to get started, but once it does, it’s incredibly steamy and awesome. I absolutely adored them as a couple.

I thought that Royally Matched was such a well written and magical story. Everything about this one clicked with me in a way that the previous book didn’t. Chase is such a brilliant author and I can’t wait to see what’s up her sleeve regarding the next book in the series. You should obviously read this if you’ve read any of her previous novels, but I still recommend it even if you haven’t. It’s a book you should read if you want to laugh out loud and swoon hardcore.

Blurb

Ezra Greene has made a pretty decent life for himself. He has a nice apartment and spends his days doing the one thing he’s always loved—creating art. Despite being somewhat of a grumpy recluse, he’s even made a few loyal friends. When he takes a side job painting a mural at a local holistic center, he can’t help being curious about a certain friendly and self-assured yoga instructor, even if he doesn’t buy into any of that Zen crap. His holier-than-thou family already tried fitting him inside a box, and he swore he’d never be molded into anybody’s belief system again.

For Daevonte Randall, adulthood has worked out pretty well. He’s close to his parents and lives with an awesome roommate. He’s content with weekend hookups, teaching yoga, and taking college courses. What he doesn’t expect is to be so intrigued by the brooding and reserved painter he’s been tasked to stay after hours with at the center. Something fascinates him about Ezra, even after Daevonte’s attempts at flirting gets him friend-zoned on the spot.

As weeks pass, Ezra and Dae get to know each other, and soon their friendship catches fire. But Ezra’s been burned pretty badly before so trust and intimacy has to be earned. Daevonte feels up to the task, but it proves difficult as Ezra continues to keep his emotions in check. Dae’s only willing to wait so long, and when they’re dealt a surprising blow, Ezra needs to decide if love is worth the risk, that is…if it’s not too late.

EXCERPT:

What do you usually do to relax?” I ask him.
“Besides paint?” I nod and he continues, “You really want to know?”
“Nope.” I wink at him and he rolls his eyes.
“Smoke weed.”
“Whew.” I tease him. “I thought it was going to be something bad by the way you were acting. Go get it. Let’s light that shit up.” I’ve never been a huge fan of weed. Not that I dislike it, because it can be fun, but it makes me giggle for a little while and pass out. I typically don’t want to just randomly pass out.
“Okay.” He pushes off the counter, sets his coffee down, and disappears down the hallway. There’s some rustling in the other room. A moment later he’s back with a small loaded pipe in his hand. “You can have green,” he says, offering me the first hit.
Our fingers brush when I take the pipe from his hand. He hesitates for a second, then nods at me as though he wants me to go ahead and put the pipe to my lips. I do. Instead of handing me the lighter, Ezra flicks the flame to life and then holds it over the weed. It crackles and pops and burns as I inhale, the smoke stinging my lungs and my throat. He pulls back, and I set the pipe down, and his eyes are burning me the same way the flame just did with the pot. My stomach flips, and he keeps looking, and holy fuck that was hot for some reason.
He takes the pipe back, still watching. He puts it to his lips, still watching. He takes a hit, still watching. There’s something about the way Ezra looks at you. It’s as though he can see something in you no one else can. Like he looks deeper because it’s easier to look inside of someone else than to look inside himself. It makes me feel like he’s seeing things I didn’t know were there. Like he’s asking questions he can’t find the words to ask and like he’s trying to make sense of all of it himself.
“Here,” he says before he hands the pipe back. I put it to my lips, and we continue on that way, him lighting for me and me passing the pipe back to him until the bowl is dusted. His eyes only briefly dart away from me from time to time, otherwise their searing stare is locked with mine. It’s the most intensely he’s looked at me since I met him.
“Wow,” I tell him. “I almost feel like I need a cigarette even though I don’t smoke them. I don’t know how all this works for you, but on my end, that was kind of hot.”
A laugh bursts out of Ezra’s mouth— it’s infectious and happy, and I realize it might be the most honest one I’ve ever heard from him. It makes me decide right then and there to do whatever it takes to make it happen again and again until it becomes a habit for him. That’s what friends are for, right?

REVIEW:

I thought that this was a fun and fast paced read. Once I started it, I wasn’t able to put it down. Lee and Dawn make an amazing team, and I look forward to reading more from them in the future. This is the second book that I’ve read in this series and I really enjoyed it. It’s not very long at all, and I read it in simply a couple of hours. If you’re looking for a sweet and sexy romance filled with complicated yet memorable characters, look no further than this one. I’m happy that I was able to read it!

Ezra is an awesome character. I thought that his asexuality was explored in an honest and compelling way. I don’t know a ton about the spectrum’s of asexuality so I can’t really speak to how accurate it is. But based on the research that I have done, this does seem pretty close to it. I thought that Ezra was an honest and intriguing guy from page one. I only the read the first book in the series, but I somewhat remember thinking that he was a cool guy who seemed complicated but interesting. I also felt like he was so creative and I loved how he used his art to channel whatever he’s going through. He was unique, and that’s what I enjoyed about him.

Daevonte was a beautiful character in his own right. He’s a young guy, and he enjoys having sex and one night stands. However, he’s still a pretty romantic guy once you get down to it. He’s just not entirely sure what it is that he wants and he has plenty of time to figure it all out. I found him to be charming and fun. He was a little judgemental and hesitant when he learned about Ezra, but I’m pretty sure that most people would be at first. He becomes a great friend to Ezra and it’s interesting to see them get to know each other better.

As I said, the romance between Daevonte and Ezra is rather slow moving since Ezra needs to know somebody before he has sex with them. But they form a sweet and compelling friendship before anything more actually goes down. Once it is developed, it’s extremely hot and awesome. I thought that this was a fabulous relationship. I definitely cheer for them completely. I think that they just worked really well together. They had such different personalities, but at the end of the day, they had more in common than they first anticipated.

I’m glad that I read this book. There’s no way I’m going to stop reading books from this author team. On their own, I think they are memorable and funny authors, but together, they are somehow even better. It’s hard to believe, but it just works. They are able to create two characters that have such different personalities and backgrounds and make us sympathize with them and love them from page one. I recommend this if you’re looking for a story that doesn’t have a ton of drama, it’s just a nice story filled with lovely characters and a hot romance.

WALK THE EDGE

My Thoughts:

Long Way Home was just as amazing as I hoped that it would be. I love absolutely anything that Katie McGarry writes, but I especially loved the Thunder Road books. Since Nowhere But Here, I’ve been dying to read Violet and Chevy’s story and I’m so glad that the wait for it is finally over. McGarry has written yet another intense story filled with memorable characters that you cheer for every step of the way. I really hope that she writes more books in this series because I feel like it’s far from over! I recommend this if you’re a fan of YA romance that gives you the feels and has a little bit of angst as well.

You guys, Violet is seriously my girl. I thought that I related to Breanna from the last book, but it turns out that I loved and related Violet just as much. The thing about Violet is that she’s full of fire and that she doesn’t take crap from anyone. Most of Katie McGarry’s heroines have similar qualities, but there was still something unique and special about this character. At the beginning of the book, she’s not totally herself since she’s still hurting from the loss of her father and still resents and blames the motorcycle club for it. However, her old personality gradually comes out more and more as the book progresses. She’s seriously a force to be reckoned with, and I loved every second of it. Have you ever met a character who isn’t afraid to bad mouth big and scary motorcycle club leaders? I didn’t think so, but that’s just who Violet is and it made me happy to see that.

Going into this, I was definitely afraid that Chevy wouldn’t be as swoony as Razor from Walk the Edge, but it turns out that he comes pretty dang close. Chevy is his own character and is completely different from both Razor and Oz. Chevy is still seventeen and can’t officially join the club yet. But he’s also a very great football player, and he feels torn between playing football and joining the rest of his family in the club. When it comes to Violet though, Chevy totally has a soft spot. He loves that girl, and it kills him to be apart from her. I really sympathized with Chevy, and felt like McGarry did an excellent job at adding all these layers to who he is.

I love the romance between Chevy and Violet. What makes them unique is that they already have a whole history between them. They’ve already had all of these memories together as childhood best friends turned lovers, so there’s no process of falling in love since they’ve already fallen. I’d love to have like a prequel where we get to see how they first got together, but I think it was still well written anyway. The two have been separated for awhile due to the death of her father and her basically forcing him to choose between her and the club. The romance has quite a bit of angst, but the fact that they loved each other was never a question.

Long Way Home was an amazing addition to a fantastic series. As mentioned, Katie can do no wronfour-starsg in my book. She’s coming out with a new book not related to this series, but I’m automatically reading it if it’s by her. This book has it all: drama, love, family, friends, action, intensity, adventure, and everything else. I always like the second chance romance trope and the author absolutely nailed it here. I recommend that you read the two other books in this series before reading this one just because they are all connected. But McGarry still provides a nice recap of events that you might have missed if you didn’t read the other books. All I can say is read this one, you won’t regret it!

Blog Tour: Lucian Divine Review

January 10, 2017 Blog Tours, Reviews 0

luciandivine-fb-banner-now

luciandivine_03-1-1-1“My guardian angel is a drunk.”

Evelyn Casey’s life is at a standstill. She’s in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she’s starting to think that she’ll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It’s absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day.

And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he’s a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he’s brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he’s brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as —-. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.

For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.

Yes, God as in God.

REVIEW:

I’m not a fan of paranormal books typically. I do my best to stay clear of them most of the time. However, I thought I’d take a chance on this one because I know that this author is really popular and the premise sounded really intriguing. It was definitely something different, and I’m glad that I read it. It was a nice change of pace from my usual contemporary romance reads. It was extremely fast paced, maybe a little too fast paced at times. Anyway, it was still a quick and actually a really fun and unique sort of read. Some people might not be interested in this book since it does touch on religion in a way and that can be a sensitive topic to say the least. That being said, I don’t think that this book will likely be for all romance reads. But I think you’ll be able to judge whether or not you’ll like this book depending on what you’re open to as a reader. My point is, I think you should read this book, but it ultimately comes down to your personal preferences when it comes to these types of stories.

What made this book worked for me was mostly the main characters. I thought that Evey was a funny and interesting main character. Not going to lie, it did bug me how judgmental she was towards her friend Brooklyn at times. For the most part though, she was still a steady character, though not particularly memorable as a whole. She just made the plot more lighthearted in a way because she had some humor and wit that was fun to see as a reader.

To put it simply, Lucian was a hot mess. As the description says, he’s an alcoholic angel which is very strange. It’s also quite humorous to see, as you might imagine. He was a funny guy for the most part. I enjoyed his spirit and the way he treated Evey for the most part. It was a little weird that at the very beginning, he’s already in love with Evey, so we don’t really get to see him actually in the process of falling for her or anything like that. I won’t spoil anything, but I wasn’t always a fan of some of the choices that he made, but I mostly was able to understand these choices. He was a fun character to read about, that’s for sure.

So the romance between Lucian and Evey moves pretty freaking quickly. I kind of understand why the author chose to do this, but I personally wasn’t a huge fan, that’s just me though. I typically hate insta-love, and I didn’t hate it exactly, just didn’t completely love it. As I mentioned, we don’t actually see Lucian falling in love with Evey since he already has these strong feelings for her when the book begins. As a whole though, I do think they made a compelling couple. It was definitely the definition of forbidden love: a guardian angel and a human. I think forbidden love is always intriguing to read about and the author totally pulled it off.

Lucian Divine was a different kind of book, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed. As mentioned, I’m not a usual reader of paranormal romances. I also have read literally no books about guardian angels prior to this one, but this did work out for me. I think the romance was a fun and fascinating one. I really liked reading this book. As I’ve already been over, I don’t recommend this for everyone. But I do think people who are fans of this author, different kinds of romance, and don’t mind reading about angels, you’ll probably like this one.

 Excerpt:

I point to the curved wooden stand with a hook at the top. “This. Explain this.”

Josie sets her hands on her hips. “It’s a banana holder.”

I give her a stern look. “I can read. I don’t need to know what. I need to know why.” I poke the object on the shelf at Bed Bath & Beyond, otherwise known as the Nexus of Unnecessary Things. Pretty sure there’s some kind of vortex or force field right smack dab in the middle of this store attracting all the weird, bizarre, and odd home goods. “Why can’t they sit on the kitchen counter? Or, how about in a bowl?”

“Maybe the bananas just like to dangle?” she suggests. “Hang free and all?”

Smacking my forehead, I go along with it. “Aha. That makes perfect sense.”

“I’m here to help.” She tugs on my shirtsleeve. “But can we please get to the sheet aisle? You can’t sleep on a naked mattress.”

“That may be true, but I could definitely sleep naked on a mattress,” I offer, and she laughs as we navigate through another sardine-packed aisle in the mammoth store.

It’s one in the afternoon, and I just moved in this morning. That took all of two hours. Spending my twenties in med school and as a resident gave me very little time for the acquisition of things, so most of my possessions fit in a duffel bag. I have very little. Not even sheets for a queen-size bed. Ergo, I’m spending Saturday at Bed Bath & Beyond, which is a bit like wandering through a Buzzfeed post titled “Ten Things I’ll Never Use.”

More like five hundred. Wait. Make that five hundred and one, because I just spotted the new number one item on the list.

“That,” I say as I make a beeline for a shelf of crème brûlée torches. Grabbing a silvery one, I hold it up. “Please say we can have a housewarming party, and you’ll make crème brûlée, and I can stride all proud and awesome into the kitchen,” I say, puffing out my chest and deepening my voice. “And I can light it with a torch, and we’ll all ooh and ahh at the manly fire I made when I lit up a dessert.”

She arches an eyebrow. “A manly fire?”

I nod vigorously. “And then you’ll let the guests take turns punching me in the face for being a total douche for owning a crème brûlée torch.”

She narrows her eyes. “You actually want people to punch you?”

I’m deadly serious as I answer her. “If I ever own a crème brûlée torch, you have carte blanche to punch me, Josie. You really should.” I drop the torch on the shelf and take her hand, clasping it tightly in mine. “Promise me. From this day forward. Promise you’ll punch me if I ever own a crème brûlée torch, a rotating tie rack, or more than one kind of cheese grater. This is part of our roommate pact.”

She grips my hand tighter, her green eyes glowing with stark seriousness. “I solemnly swear to pummel you under all the aforementioned circumstances. As proof of our friendship and roommate solidarity.”

“You’re a saint,” I say, then wrap a hand around her head and tug her close for a quick kiss on her forehead.

And hello, sweet, sexy scent of Josie. What is this delicious smell? Is it . . . oh fuck me.Cherries. My God, she smells like cherries. Like the perfect summer fruit. Like the naughtiest fruit. And I’ve got to wonder if that cherry scent is her face lotion, her shampoo, or her body wash?

Body wash.

My mind is adrift, and the word association begins. Because what goes with body wash but nudity?

Naked woman in the shower. Washing. Lathering. Soaping.

Ah, hell.

Snap the fuck out it, Summers.

My Thoughts:

In every review of each Lauren Blakely book, I brag about how amazing it is. I have yet to read a book from her that I didn’t adore. I especially love it when she writes from the male POV. I think she does such a great job at getting inside these guys minds and truly showing how they feel about these girls. She’s an incredible author and I can’t brag enough about her. Full Package was yet another funny and charming romance that I loved from the first page. This one also contains one of my all time favorite tropes which is friends to lovers. Josie and Chase were such an amazing couple with so much chemistry from the start and I loved their story. While this isn’t my all time favorite book in this series, I still enjoyed so much about it anyway. This was a wonderful read and I’m happy that I picked it up!

So Chase was the narrator of this book and I thought he was a great character. I fell in love with him in Well Hung basically. He’s definitely a smart guy. One of the unique things about all of these guys are that they all come from different interesting professions. Chase just so happens to be a doctor who works in the emergency room. Though he had somewhat of a manwhore history, he was 100% dedicated to Josie throughout the book. At times, he did become a bit cheesy. For the most part though, he was incredibly swoony and I adored him for some of the things that he said and did for Josie.

Josie was a beautiful and strong love interest for Chase. We’ve known Josie a little longer than Chase since she’s both Nick and Wyatt’s little sister and I’ve always wondered if she’d finally get her own story. Honestly, I didn’t love her as much as some of the other girls. I still think she was a strong and independent woman. She was also fierce and extremely loyal to her friends. That being said, I just didn’t feel as connected to her as some of Lauren’s other characters, but that’s just me. Josie works at a bakery and we did get some insight into what she was thinking through some of her personal recipes that were shared throughout the novel.

As a couple, they were amazing together. As mentioned, the relationship follows one of my favorite tropes: friends to lovers. I thought the author did an excellent job at developing this relationship. It’s clear at the start of the story that the two are ridiculously close to one another. I loved the intense but lovely friendship between them. They had a strong connection and a lot of hilarious and witty banter going on. The dynamics between them obviously began changing when they first began living together. Like I said, even as friends, they had so much obvious chemistry and it was awesome to read. Once they start having sex, those scenes are electric too. The sex is steamy as hell, that’s for sure. All in all, they make a fabulous couple.

As a whole, I’m happy that I read this one. As mentioned, it probably wasn’t an all time favorite but it was still just as great as I hoped it would be. Josie and Chase were both memorable supporting characters in some of these previous books, and I’m glad that they ended up together. They made one hell of a couple. This was an interesting and fun read for me. I recommend this if you’re a fan of this author. Even if you’ve never read anything by her, you still will likely enjoy it if you’re a fan of romantic comedies filled with fascinating and complex characters. You should totally check it out!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00027]

My name is Brooke Barker…

And I’m a freaking disaster.

No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.

Not to mention I’m completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.

The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.

The second problem? He’s my best friend.

My shut-up-and-put-harry-potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampon, kinda best friend.

And that’s all he can be, right?

Right.

Being Brooke is a standalone romantic comedy. Hilarious, super-sexy, and possibly highly inappropriate at times, this is the perfect feel-good read!

Excerpt:

Cain’s phone begins to buzz on the table. The screen lights up, and the short name on the screen makes me have to fight a frown.
I know it’s Nina. It always is. It’s like she has a Brooke-dar. She can sense whenever Cain and I are alone and hanging out.
My heart sinks, slowly but heavily, and I school my expression into one of not caring. I refuse to look away from the TV now.
Cain hands me his pizza box, which I take, begrudgingly, then he leans forward and grabs his phone. He waits for the buzzing to stop, then unlocks it and turns it off vibrate.
Then? Then he shoves it under the table, screen down.
Ho. Lee. Shit.
I gape at him. I can’t help it.
A piece of pepperoni drops off the slice of pizza in my hand—the same one that’s frozen halfway to my mouth as I stare at him in total disbelief. Did he really just do it?
“What?” Cain shrugs and takes his box back, grabbing a piece of half-eaten, meaty pizza and shoving the end in his mouth. The crust crunches as he bites down.
I swallow and glance at the coffee table. “I don’t think you’ve ever not taken a call from her.” I can’t help the derogatory way I say ’her’. It’s not intentional—honest. It’s ingrained in me to be vicious to other women. I think it’s a female thing. Self-preservation and all that.
“I don’t think I ever haven’t either.” Cain tilts his head to the side and meets my gaze, a suspicious glint in his green eyes. “But the point is, we haven’t done this in weeks, and I’m having too much fun to leave. Besides, we have all this junk food. If I don’t help you eat it, you’ll eat it all, then it’ll be my fault when your pants don’t fit.”
Oh my god.
“Does she know you’re here?” I smirk slyly and raise my eyebrows.
He shifts uncomfortably. With a cough, he puts his pizza down and grabs his beer bottle to swig from it.
Oh. My. Shitty. Life.
“She doesn’t, does she?” I sit up straight, throwing my half-slice back into my box and shoving his shoulder. “Cain!”
“No,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his ear. “She doesn’t know.”
I laugh. I can’t help it. It’s totally immature of me to delight in the fact he hasn’t told the Prissy Princess where is he and he’s ignoring her calls, but I do. It’s hilarious.
And, okay. I’m smug. Totally smug. There’s only one reason he hasn’t told her, and that’s because she hates me too.
Bitchy Best Friend Mission: Level Up!
“And tell me.” I snicker, just about holding back the volcano of laughter threatening to erupt. “Where does Nina think you are?”
“She thinks I’m at Mom’s.” He looks at me, his lips flattening into a thin line. “Stop laughing, B. No, don’t shake your damn head. I fucking mean it. She’s a little insecure over my friendship with you and Carly, that’s all. Sometimes it’s easier to just tell a… little white lie.”
“A little white lie? She thinks you’re at your mom’s!” I laugh harder and wipe at my eyes because they feel a little too wet.
“I just want the best of both worlds right now, all right?”
“What is the best of both worlds? Pizza with me and blow jobs from her?”
“She chooses not to eat gluten. Until she finds a gluten-free recipe she likes, I can’t eat pizza when she’s around.”
Which is a lot.
I raise my eyebrows again. “Your girlfriend won’t eat gluten but she’ll happily put your dick in her mouth?”
“Brooke. Don’t be a bitch.” He chucks a piece of chicken from his pizza at me, his eyes narrowing.
I’m dying. I think this is it—this is how I die, laughing at Cain’s lame excuses for lying to his girlfriend about spending time with me.
“Oh my fuck. This is hilarious. Seriously. Someone call Comedy Central.”
“Brooke.” He says my name again, this time quieter.
I stop laughing. Just about.
“I’m sorry. I just think it’s funny. You want me to be nice to her but you lie to her about spending time with me.” I shrug a shoulder and peel a piece of pepperoni off my pizza. I’m not even that hungry anymore.
He sighs, putting the top down on his box, and sits back. “She thinks there’s something going on between us.”
I laugh even harder because I might cry if I don’t.
Hi, breaking heart. Grab the tissues, yo.
There’s an awkward silence hanging between us now. It’s not the first time someone has thought that, but given that the more time I spend with Cain, the more I seem to fall for him, it’s awkward. Especially since he’s lying to her just to hang out with me.
I clear my throat and look up at him. “That’s ridiculous. You’re my best friend. Like anything would ever happen between us. I can’t put up with your shit taste in music, for a start.”
“Exactly,” he replies in a quieter voice, scratching behind his ear again. “It’s fucking stupid. I can’t stand your taste in music either. Who the fuck likes Justin Bieber?”
“People who think Kanye West should retire.”

My thoughts:

Emma Hart is easily one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. She always writes such hilarious and witty stories. The heroines and heroes are both always so quirky and relatable. I honestly have yet to read a book by her that I haven’t absolutely adored! They are such light and fun reads. I highly recommend reading her works if you’re looking for a good romantic comedy author. Anyway, Being Brooke might just be her funniest book yet! Brooke is honestly all of us. She’s awkward, weird, and imperfect but she’s so funny to read. You should totally read Being Brooke, especially since it’s on sale for only .99 cents right now! I’m not sure how long that’s going to last so be sure to take advantage of it while you can.

As I already said, my girl Brooke is just seriously the best. She likes calling herself a hot mess, which she clearly is. She doesn’t have her life together to say the least. She dropped out of college because she had no idea what she was doing, which is something that I can personally relate to since I’m in college right now in the same situation. I absolutely loved seeing all of the crazy situations that Brooke somehow found herself in. Seriously, there’s all kind of hilarious and awkward situations that go down that will easily make you laugh out loud. I have to say that Brooke has to be one of the best and most memorable protagonists that I’ve read in a long time!

So I’m a fan of friends to lovers which is the case with this romance. I’m not going to lie to you guys, I liked Brooke a lot better than Cain personally. But I could definitely relate to Brooke being in love with Cain all of these years but being afraid to say something for fear of losing his friendship. I thought the friendship and relationship that they had was awesome and also hilarious. However, I’m not sure the chemistry was totally there and I got the feeling that they were probably better off being best friends. I still thought that it was well written and fun as a whole.

The main thing to takeaway from Being Brooke is that it’s hilarious. Be prepared to laugh throughout pretty much the entire book. It’s such a quick and fun read that I highly think that you’ll enjoy it as well. Brooke and Cain were solid and well developed characters that I liked reading about. Not to mention that the fact that the supporting characters were also great as well. My favorite though was probably Brooke’s hilarious and horny Grandpa. Seriously, he loved making inappropriate sexual comments frequently and it was pretty great. You should pick this up if you’re looking for something light!

Signing with Brighthouse Records was supposed to be everything we ever wanted—our better life. Our chance at everything we never had but always wanted. All our dreams would finally come true and we were on top of the world. It was our chance at the happiness we never had in life.

Our every desire was at our fingertips and the power of that feeling was all consuming. But then it took every dream we thought would come true and it slapped us in the face with the cold hard reality.

Dreams were just that…something that floated on the cusp of untouchable, taunting you with every graze of your fingertips before slipping even further away.

Happiness…that feeling is a joke.

In the end it became painfully obvious that each of us would always have each other, but we would forever be alone.

My Thoughts:

I thought this was a sweet and sexy read. I’ve been a fan of Harper Sloan’s books for awhile now, and I’ve been looking forward to Chance’s story ever since I read Unexpected Fate. I couldn’t imagine him getting his happily ever after when anyone besides the feisty Wren. She’s such a force to be reckoned with and I absolutely adored her character. Chance and Wren made such a beautiful couple, and I loved both of their stories so much. This is a great first book to a new series about a very popular band, and I can’t wait to read the next book!

As I already said, Wren was just such a great character. She was so comfortable in her own skin, yet she also had some serious insecurities that came from awful previous relationships and her parents. Luckily though, she has her twin brother and their two childhood friends who make up the band Loaded Replay. She still feels like something in her life is missing, which is when Chance steps in. I thought it was great how Wren was the one who was so confident about being with Chance. I’ve read a lot of romance books recently where the boy was the more adamant one, so this was a nice change. I’m always a fan of books that involve music, and this one didn’t disappoint. Wren reminded me a lot of Hayley Williams from Paramore, badass and also someone who is extremely passionate about music.

Chance was a fabulous and fierce book boyfriend. My heart broke for him as he struggled with some of his biggest regrets. Chance is a former Marine who works for Corps Security, but is now taking the job to be Wren’s personal bodyguard. As mentioned, he has a past that makes him very closed off and reluctant to get involved with anyone. However, he quickly finds Wren basically impossible to resist. He’s a great book boyfriend because he’s obviously protective, but at the same time, he’s not suffocating to Wren. He’s just a solid and swoony guy and I really enjoyed his story.

The romance between Chance and Wren is pretty steamy from the start. Yes, he comes to work for the band to be her personal bodyguard, but due to some weirdness with the record label that the band is with, he has to pretend to be her boyfriend to the public. From the first day that they pretend to be together, the chemistry is evident between them. It’s a little on the insta-love side of things, but I think that it worked since the romance still had a lot of time to build. It moved extremely quickly, like they fell in love in like a week. But it didn’t bother me too much for whatever reason. Chance and Wren were a fantastic couple to say the least.

Jaded Hearts was a great rock star romance that I seriously enjoyed. Harper Sloan is an author that never disappoints. She writes such beautiful romances filled with flawed yet fierce characters. It’s not a perfect book, but it’s an honest and real one. This was also a really fast paced read. I was able to devour it all in just a few hours. I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of rock star romances or of Harper Sloan or if you enjoy both. It’s also great if you’re simply searching for a book that isn’t extremely heavy.
